The Assignment: Self Portrait Montage
Focus Point: Editing
First: select a segment of music that has personal meaning
(It cannot be less than 15 or more than 45 seconds). This
will be your sound track.
Montage editing is a style of editing where “ the emphasis
is on a dynamic juxtaposition of individual shots that calls
attention to itself and forces the viewer consciously to come
to conclusions about the interplay of images while he or she
is also emotionally and psychologically affected in a less
conscious way. Instead of continuity (it) emphasizes conflict
and contrast.”
“In this sense, montage is a more artistic kind of
editing where the emphasis is less on the simple progression
of narration and more on the impact of the sequence of images
upon the viewer.”
The assignment: Plan and make a short sequence
in which you demonstrate your knowledge and mastery of montage
editing. The sequence will tell your audience something about
you. It is best if you just focus on one aspect of yourself.
You can do this through comparison, through association, by
simply placing things side by side in film, or by any other
means you discover. Feel free to include objects or photographs.
Whether you are telling something truthful about yourself
or making up a new image for yourself, the most important
thing is that your audience gets a clear picture of the You
you are showing.
