Hypothesis:

At the middle school level:

  • Most students, especially those with behavior, motivation or skill issues, tend to like most doing the parts of a project that suite their learning strengths.
  • One gender would be more apt to enjoy exploring other learning styles that might not be their strength.
  • Learners with dominant Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic or Interpersonal/Auditory learning styles would be distributed evenly throughout the classroom.

Result:

  • For the average student, about half used their learning strengths and about half liked either the process or product of using their weakest intelligence (of the 3 choices)
  • Did not seem to matter which gender - equal for male or female.
  • Learners with dominant Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic or Interpersonal/Auditory learning styles were distributed evenly throughout the classroom.

Statistics:

Total Number of Students in the 6th Grade = (26) (22) = 48

Percentage of students that could not be evaluated by their comments: 3/48 = 6%

When given a choice of predominately 3 learning styles:

Students that liked to use their strengths: 12/26 10/22 = 22/48 = 46%

Students that liked either the process or product of using their weakest intelligence (of the 3 choices): 11/26 10/22 = 22/48 = 46%

Number of  7/26 3/22 males vs. females  4/26 7/22 = 10 vs 12 only 4% difference

Students with behavior, motivational or skill issues used their strengths: 5/8 3/6=8/14 = 57%

Students with behavior, motivational or skill issues also strongly enjoyed another intelligence:  5/8 4/6 = 9/14 = 64%

Interpersonal Dominant students: 16/26 9/22 = 25/48 = 52%

Bodily Kinesthetic Dominant students: 12/26 11/22 = 23/48 = 48%

Visual-Spatial Dominant students: 9/26 7/22 = 16/48 = 33%

Conclusion:

At the middle school level:

  • When given a choice, students when met with a challenge (either behavior, motivational or skill issues), will choose to learn through their strongest learning style.
  • Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic and Interpersonal/Auditory learning styles are distributed evenly throughout each classroom
  • There is no strong difference in the way the males or female choose to go outside their "comfort zone" of learning style(s).
  • Given the opportunity, more than 1/2 the students in a class will at least try to strengthen one of their weakest learning styles and actually enjoy either the process or the product (outcome) of using that learning style.
  • Students that were equally strong in all 3 areas like all 3 projects?
  • In an art class, students are more likely to learn using movement and Interpersonal relationships than Visually.
